“Magazine Style” themes are the latest trend to hit the Wordpress world.
They’re called “magazine style” (sometimes “newspaper style”) because they organize your homepage and give it a similar look to an online newspaper or magazine.
The biggest upside to this style of theme is that they really do look fantastic. It turns your average, everyday, boring blog into something far more professional.
The biggest downside would probably be time…it usually takes longer to make a new post because they typically require an image to go along with it, and you usually have to make 2-3 different sizes of the same image (1 size to be displayed if it’s a “featured” article, 1 size for your most recent posts, and another size image that’s displayed for recent posts, in your archives, and when someone does a search).
Another thing to keep in mind is that most magazine style themes are “premium themes” which means you have to pay for them. Some will see this as a downside, I prefer to think of it as an upside, since it means that everybody and their brother won’t be using the same theme you are.
Without further ado, here’s the list…

Please note that this page will not remain static…I intend it to be a one-stop resource for people who are looking for a magazine/newspaper-style theme for their WordPress blog.
If I’m missing anything, please let me know about it (by leaving a comment below), and I’ll add it here. When new ones are released, I’ll also be adding them to this page.
Finally, if you’re going to be trying out one of the above themes, here’s a great plugin that lets you test out a new theme without your visitors seeing it.
either by Full Feed RSS or by email. Thanks!

Great post! I just started making a monetizing blog and also have similar goals as you (still plan to keep my day job since it pays rather nicely….maybe if I make some SERIOUS $$$ from blogging I will quit, haha). The one I have on my blog is OK for now, but I definitely might think about paying for one of these themes in the future. Thanks!

Thanks for the post. I’ve been looking at buying a new theme for my website and have been considering getting a customized theme…(I’m going to be getting some quotes fairly soon.) Did you design your own theme?

Andrew -> Nope…the theme I’m currently using is called Mandingo. It’s not very unique, but there’s a lot of things I like about it. The only things I’ve done to it are make my own background and header image.

Great post,
this is my personal opinion.
there are some themes which should be in Paid section and some free themes should be in Premium themes section(they are really superb)

[…] run contests, write some helpful tips, link to great posts written by my visitors, and put together comprehensive lists on magazine style Wordpress themes, it all takes time. A lot of time. And to be quite honest with you, I don’t enjoy […]
